I recently heard a song again that was released in 2015 called “I will follow you”. I knew the lyrics already, but I guess I had never focused on what was being said. One of the verses sings “when the sea is calm and all is right, when I feel your favor flood my life, even in the good I’ll follow you”.

Our human nature is to rely on ourselves and our resources when things are going well. If we’re honest, at times we have all taken our eyes off the giver and focused on the gifts. Yet, when our efforts fail we cry out to God for rescue. We can read an example of Moses encouraging the Israelites in Deuteronomy 6:12 to not to forget their God when things are going well; “then watch yourself, that you do not forget the Lord who brought you from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.”

Dear church family, let us not use God as a rescue tool only to be used in emergencies. Take time today to worship the Lord for the good times as well, remembering that complete devotion to God should come first.

Blessings,
Jeff
