Bad to the Bone | Romans 3:9–20
Speaker: Pastor Dan Rosser
Scripture: Romans 3:9–20
Teaser: Join us this week as we look at Romans 3:9–20 and recognize the true state of man.
In Romans 3:9–20, the Apostle Paul delivers a sobering assessment of the human condition. Sin is not simply a problem that affects a few people or results from a handful of bad decisions. Scripture reveals that all people stand under sin and fall short of God’s righteousness.
Paul describes the reality of our sinful nature, exposing the ways humanity has turned away from God in thought, word, and deed. From our failure to seek God to the words we speak and the way we treat others, this passage leaves no room for self-righteousness.
But Paul also explains the purpose of God’s Law: it reveals our sin and makes us aware of our need for God’s grace. Before we can understand the depth of our need for salvation, we must honestly recognize the true state of our hearts.
Sermon Points
1. All Men Are Born Under Sin
Paul describes the universal reach of sin and how it affects every part of human life.
No One Seeks Righteousness — Humanity cannot claim righteousness on its own.
No One Seeks God — Sin turns our hearts away from our Creator.
No One Does Good — Our actions cannot establish our own righteousness before God.
All People Are Liars — Sin affects the truthfulness of our words.
All People Are Malicious in Speech — Our words can reveal the corruption within our hearts.
Men Are Murderers — Sin can lead to destructive actions against others.
Men Are Troublemakers — Rather than pursuing peace, sinful humanity often leaves conflict and destruction in its wake.
Men Don’t Fear God — At the root of our sinful condition is a failure to honor God as He deserves.
2. The Law Makes Man Aware of His Sin
God’s Law reveals our shortcomings and shows us that we cannot justify ourselves through our own efforts. Rather than giving us grounds for boasting, it exposes our need for God’s mercy and salvation.
Join us this week at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church as Pastor Dan Rosser leads us through this challenging passage and helps us recognize the true state of humanity before a holy God.
