King David gives us some insight into our need to seek the Lord in the morning and to be transparent before Him as we seek Him.
Psalm 5:1-3
1 Listen to my words, Lord; consider my sighing.
2 Pay attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for I pray to you.
3 In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I plead my case to you and watch expectantly. (CSB)
David makes it clear that he began his day with the Lord. It is important that we start our day with a focus on God. I am not a morning person per se, but I have learned that I must spend some time in the morning trying to orient my mind and my heart to the things of God.
Daily we need to make sure that we are getting in scripture as soon as we have the ability to clearly think and focus even if it is only for a short time. That may not be your best time to study and dig into God’s Word, but it certainly needs to be a priority to focus on Him so our thoughts for the day begin in the right place. There will be plenty of things begging for your attention throughout the day so starting your day with Him will be very helpful and is very wise!
Notice also, in the first two verses that David doesn’t come with some sort of pretense. He doesn’t clean up his words to make it sound like all is well. He is dealing with enemies and struggling so He comes to God in honesty. The word “sighing” can also be translated “groaning”.
This is an emotional and heavy feeling with a need to hear from God. David acknowledged God as his King. The king made it clear who was really King!
Later in this Psalm, David also acknowledges that even the ability to enter into God’s presence through prayer was a gift from God because of His great love and mercy. David also makes it clear in verse 3 that he is watching “expectantly” as he pleads his case before God. God hears and answers our prayers. They don’t always get answered the way we want them to but if we will pay close attention and watch expectantly, we will see God’s hand at work answering our prayers.
Seek God in the morning and start your day right! Watch with expectation as He answers your prayers. His timing is different from ours and His answers won’t always be what we would like but He will always answer in perfect timing, and He will do what is best for us.
