12 For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, even penetrating as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him to whom we must answer. Hebrews 4:12-13

These are the memory verses that our Wednesday night kids have been learning over the summer while outside at the pavilion. They are a wonderful reminder of just how deep God’s word penetrates our life. A few things to note are:

It is living – The Word of God is alive because God is a living God. God’s Word is compared to a seed that when planted, produces a harvest in our lives and others.

It is active – “active” means “effective, powerful, and efficient to produce results. God’s Word is not only alive, but it can also get the job done!

It is sharp – The picture painted by the words describe a knife or sword that cuts down deep even between the bones, down to our innermost thoughts, feelings, and attitudes, and nothing is hidden from God. Also, God’s Word is the ultimate measuring tool when it comes to our obedience to God.

Knowing that our deepest, darkest attitudes and thoughts are clearly visible to God, and that God’s word is the measure that we are to strive to live by, are not always comforting ideas, they can be convicting. However, the writer of Hebrews was not condemning Christians, but offering reassurance that it is not too late to finish the task of obedience and enter into God’s rest.

Do not give up! Finish the task of obedience.
